Faces
“Bay Mood”
36X48 oil on canvas, unframedWater and women are themes of mine. The connection to me is palpable, the opportunity to express mood infinite, the colors clear. Clients purchasing one of my faces often tell me they have named the women. The faces become members of the family. Wonder what their stories are?
“Girl in Love”
30X40 acrylic and pastel on art canvasIs she dreaming of him?
“Island Girl”
36X48 oil on art canvasAt the islands again. Taken by the face, eyes penetrating, knowing, anticipatory. Can you feel the warmth of the Caribbean sun?
“Waiting for K”
30X40 acrylic on art canvasI had another title for this until a friend who saw it asked who she was waiting for. The eyes may be serene or lost, directed or haunted. Or all of these.
“Lady in the Green Hat”
24X36 oil on art canvasI attended the wedding of two longtime friends in this hat. The smile makes the emotions clear, without the eyes. I am joyful.
“Grace”
30X40 oil on canvas, framedBeautiful woman, confident, poised, outwardly brave. Eyes stoic, courageous and vulnerable.
“Tahiti Girl”
18X24 oil on canvas, unframedSome Gaughin was in my mind. I thought he painted square women until I saw the women of Tahiti. Many square jaws, coupled with gorgeous skin, sultry eyes and sensuous lips. Innocent woman, innocent place, innocent colors.
“Madonna of the Flowers”
36X48 mixed media on art canvasI was in Mexico and saw the most beautiful woman selling flowers. Eyes wide open and accepting. Originally, I painted a much older face on this woman, but the more she looked at me, the younger I thought her face should be, so I changed this part and repainted the canvas entirely.
“New Mexico Woman”
30X30 oil on canvas, unframedSpectacular earth colors in New Mexico, natural elements, simple and complex emotions. History there to discover. She’s looking at something or someone, just out of reach. She’s clinging to her art pottery.
“Green Lady II”
18X24 oil on canvas framedI live close to this woman. Exotic, foreign face, deep eyes facing directly at the viewer, unafraid.
“Nude”
24X36 oil on art canvasParty girl. What you see is what you get—or, is it? The expression tells it all—or doesn’t. This may be more complicated than you thought.
“Navajo Woman”
36X48 oil on canvas,
framed in barn woodIn the body of my work, this is an important painting, representing one of my early faces works. My thinking was to connect the woman with her past—the problem was, the past was not alive, but part cave painting. So, she stands proudly in full regalia, but with haunted eyes. Does she know how far past her past really is? Where is her present?
“Arun”
13 ˝ X 17 ˝ oil on canvasboard, framedPortrait of a friend from India. Her eyes asymmetrical, piercing, reflective of the beauty of her soul.
