About Lyn Striegel
Lyn Striegel is a Canadian by birth and a current resident of Chesapeake and North Beach, Maryland, where she lives and practices law as an art form all its own. Multidimensional, she has devoted herself to painting, primarily in oil, since she was old enough to hold a paint brush in a very small hand. The joy she felt as a youngster in creating on canvas remains today. From age 10, she went to painting lessons weekly. At 16, she moved with her family to Arizona where the desert colors shaped her vision and she continued college-level studies in fine art.
By age 21, she had her own studio, studied with David Smith, the sculptor, and continued fine arts classes at Iowa State University. At 30, she made a career change to law and pursued legal studies at the same time attending classes at the Corcoran. She continues to practice law and paint, a seeming contradiction, but as she says “law practice is not a term of art, it is art.” And, “art feeds the soul.”
Her work has been shown at the French Embassy and at galleries in Iowa, Canada and the U.S. and is in many private collections. She is represented at ArtWorks@7th, the North Beach, Maryland art gallery she helped found. ArtWorks@7th provides the perfect opportunity to blend legal prowess with palate. To take this artist cooperative from burgeoning concept to successful reality provided the perfect opportunity to create the Policies and Procedures one day and submit a stunning display of nearly dry canvasses the next.
For the past several years, Lyn’s work, primarily in oil and acrylic on canvas, has focused on large size portraits of women, a subject that reflects her love of color, shape and mood. She paints the eyes first so that the subject is looking at her while she completes the painting. Sometimes, the women she paints come from her imagination; other times, she uses models. Occasionally, someone will recognize themselves in a painting. Recently, a sixteen year old girl saw one of Lyn’s paintings at a gallery and, in it, saw herself. Interestingly, the title of the painting was the “Green Lady”, and the girl’s last name was Green. Elizabeth Green is now a model for Lyn’s work.
