Lyn’s new work represents a breakthrough. Her primary art heroes, Pollack, Rothko and O’Keefe, all focused on color, line and balance. Of the three, Pollack’s technique is the closest to what Lyn uses. But, where Pollack placed the paint on the canvas in a random but deliberate way, Lyn places the color on the canvas and allows the painting to paint itself—with a little help.  You will see one canvas different from the others—this Lyn calls a “Pothko” since it represents a dialogue between Pollack and Rothko.

The current work requires tremendous energy-paint is applied to the canvas in many layers and color combinations. The paint itself moves on the canvas to create combinations of shapes and colors. Lyn manipulates and assists the process. The attempt is made not to intervene, but to apply just the right amount of balance to the canvas. No brushes are used in the technique but paint is applied as the shapes emerge on the canvas. Some paintings achieve the desired effect relatively quickly—after a few hours. Others take weeks.

The paintings require the viewer’s attention. The viewer contributes his or her life experiences to the work, calling to mind whatever is suggested by the color, line and balance. Each painting is simple but infinitely complex, reflecting our world.

The technique Lyn uses has no name—the closest analogy would be to ontological literary criticism, being the theory that the work speaks for itself. The paintings also have no names. They are numbered only to allow the viewer to decide what he or she sees in the work. The paintings are not signed on the front but only on the back so they may be hung however the viewer decides. Lyn makes no decisions for the viewer’s approach to the work.

All paintings are done in acrylic on canvas. The canvas sizes range from 24X30 to 30X40.  For more information on the work, send an email to Lyn at Lyn@ArtByLynStriegel.com .
